When is DV Lottery 2025 registration starting?

Registration for the 2025 DV Lottery opens on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (GMT-4) and closes Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Standard Time (EST) (GMT-5).

How to apply

Registration for the DV Lottery is free and must be submitted online through the Department of State’s Electronic Diversity Visa (E-DV) website. Only one entry may be submitted per person.

What happens after I apply?

The Department of State will randomly select individuals by computer. Beginning May 4, 2024, applicants can check the status of their applications via the Entrant Status Check at the program website. Selected applicants will not be individually notified, so status must be checked in the online system used for registration.

What if I am selected?

Selection in the lottery does not guarantee that you will receive a green card. You must still meet all qualifications for permanent residence, and a visa number must be available to you. More individuals are selected in the lottery than there are available visas.

If you are selected, you will be eligible to submit an application for permanent residence if and when a visa number for you becomes available, beginning October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025. The immigrant visa/green card must be issued by September 30, 2025.

Tips for applying

  • Be sure to read and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Submit your application as early as possible.
  • Have someone else review your application before you submit it.
  • Keep your confirmation number. You will need it to check the status of your application.

Beware of scams

The U.S. government does not send notices to registrants notifying them of selection. There are many scams associated with the DV Lottery, so be careful and do not give out your personal information to anyone who claims to be affiliated with the program.
